Hay Time

Near Reeth

We were first contacted by the owner of these four meadows in 2006. After taking soil samples we advised him to carry on with the recently-reintroduced traditional management for a few years so that the soil fertility would reduce; a necessary condition before seed can be added.

In 2009 the soil fertility had lowered and we added locally-harvested green hay to the meadows, totalling 3.3ha. The following spring we re-surveyed the meadows and we and the farmer were delighted that all of them had new species becoming established in them. The photo shows the kind of colourful, flower-rich meadow that the Daggerstone Meadows are being restored to.
